Interrogating the Gospels

  John 14:1-14, Do not let your hearts be troubled (Version: NRSV) 14 ‘ Do not let your hearts be troubled . Believe *  in God, believe also in me.  2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? *   3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.  4 And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ *   5 Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’  6 Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.   7 If you know me, you will know *  my Father also . From now on you do know him and have seen him.’ 8  Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’  9 Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

J ohn 10:1-10, Jesus the Good Shepherd (Version: NRSV) ‘Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and
